International Green Construction Code (IGCC) Version 1.0 Released

Green Building CodeThe International Code Council recently announced the release of Public Version 1.0 of the International Green Construction Code (IGCC) to regulate construction of new and existing commercial buildings.

The IGCC aims to significantly reduce energy usage and greenhouse gasses. It addresses site development and land use, including preservation of natural and material resources. Enforcement of the code will improve indoor air quality and support the use of energy-efficient appliances, renewable energy systems, water resource conservation, rainwater collection and distribution systems, and the recovery of used water (graywater).

New Guidance on Clearing the Indoor Air through Improved IAQ

Interior Air QualityEnsuring good indoor air quality (IAQ) means everyone breathes a little easier: occupants who experience improved health, comfort and productivity, and owners who see increased building value and reduced risk.

New guidance for achieving enhanced IAQ is available from five leading building industry associations and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The book and CD provide strategies needed to achieve good IAQ using proven technologies and without significantly increasing costs.

Fifty Percent Increase in Green Building Programs since 2007
increase-green-buildingIn the wake of an extended global economic slump, local communities are pushing ahead and expanding their green building programs. More than one in five U.S. cities with populations greater than 50,000 surveyed by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) report having a policy to promote green buildings, accounting for more than 53 million people.

The AIA initially conducted this survey in 2007 for a Local Leaders in Sustainability report that has just been updated. The new report, Green Building Policy in a Changing Economic Environment, is an inventory of policies and best practices intended to help policymakers advance a more sustainable legislative agenda for growth and development.

NAHB Publication Offers Glimpse into Financial Records of Builders

construction equipmentBuilders now have a unique opportunity to see how their business stacks up against the competition with a new publication from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). NAHB’s publishing arm, BuilderBooks recently released the 2010 edition of the Cost of Doing Business Study, a national study of builders’ business practices and financial performance.

This new resource gives home builders a rare glimpse at other builders’ financial books by providing data about profitability, cost of sales and expenses from hundreds of home builders across the country.

HUD Announces $300 Million in Recovery Act Grants to Create Green Public Housing
HUD Recovery ActDENVER - U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan announced $300 million in Recovery Act competitive grants today that will allow 36 public housing authorities across the U.S. to utilize green materials and technology to create public housing that conserves energy and encourages more healthy lifestyles.
 
Donovan announced the Denver Housing Authority would receive $10 million of the Public Housing Capital Funds announced today to continue its redevelopment of South Lincoln Park Homes, a public housing development the housing authority is currently redeveloping into a mixed-use, mixed-income transit oriented community.
